Never Been to New York

June 24, 2008

Oh boy. Last line of "Magic Burns" by Ilona Andrews

Well, maybe I have. Does LaGuardia airport count?

Okay, so I've been waiting to post these pictures. I participated in a challenge on one of my Yahoo! groups. The challenge was to make four New York Beauty blocks from a specific set of patterns, using the fugliest fabric in your stash.

For many, the challenge began at choosing the ugly fabric. I began pulling out random nasty fabs from different places in my color-wheel-separated stash (realizing it was pretty much organized - unintentionally - by the color wheel was quite a shock, lemme tell ya). After pulling four fabrics from different stacks, I turned to look at them on the table.

It seems that birds of a feather flock together. The four fabrics coordinated. As in, right there I had the makings of a (coordinated) Quilt O'Fug.

After NOT supressing a shudder, I put them all back and found yet ANOTHER fabric to play with.

Here's the finished product (yes, the quilt is square, it's either poor photography or optical illusion that may make it look otherwise).

NYB During quiltingAnd here it is again, during machine quilting...

Taking pictures at night without setting up any special lighting equipment makes the pics really yellow-y.

And just to show that I really do go overboard on quilting motifs...

I didn't "Win" the viewer's choice in the competition, that rightly went to Bobbie's stunning quilt. That's okay. I'm just thrilled that the darned thing came out looking like the design I had in mind.

Now, I wonder if I should give this one away, too?

I LOVE the quilting on your New York Beauty! OK..so the challenge was to use "ugly" fabrics? Hmm..? I think yours looks pretty good..except that your fabrics aren't ugly. ;)

Wow Tracy - after looking up close at your quilting, I'm afraid to think what I'll do to mine, quilting it. As it was, I barely finished piecing mine in time to take the picture, send it to Val, and head over to Dad's to watch the Celtics game. Maybe I should name mine "New York goes to Boston" or something goofy like that.

I really regret that I had only one vote because every one was a winner!

Thanks for the comment on my blog. Those fabrics are from Nancy Halverson and I didn't like them when I received the stack as a gift. I only opened the stack recently (after 5 or 6 years of sitting on my shelf) and realized how pretty they are!. I'll be sure to post when the quilt is done.

By the way, I love your ugly quilt!

..big sigh...
