Thursday Thirteen

November 01, 2006

It's Thursday somewhere...
Here comes a list that offers little surprise for anyone who's been to a restaurant with me....

Thirteen Monk Moments - Food

  1. I'm a creature of habit. 17 years I've been eating at Red Robin. 17 years I've ordered the Mushroom-Swiss burger and a Dr. Pepper, no ice.

  2. I smooth out my food after every bite. If it can leave a dent/hole, like taking a bite of oatmeal, mashed potatoes, ice cream, I'll smooth out the whole top (or side) before taking another bite.

  3. I peel the brown layer off of almonds (inside my mouth) before I crunch the almond. I do the same with grapes before I chew them. (Yes, I can do the cherry stem thing, too)

  4. Every single cup of water, coffee, soft drink needs to have a "coaster" under it, even if it's just a folded up napkin. (Thanks, Mom)

  5. Breakfast must be arranged in the same order on the plate every morning - going clockwise: Hash browns at the top, Canadian Bacon, English Muffin (toasted twice, thankyouverymuch) and 2 eggs. It's also eaten in the same order every morning - eggs (with the muffin), hash browns, then bacon.

  6. I only eat the red on apples. I'll take a real bite and work all the way 'round the fruit. Once there's only white left, I'm done.

  7. I eat the peel from oranges. Only the thick ones, not the thin ones (too chewy). Frequently I'll give the de-peeled orange to Mr. W. to finish because I'm full.

  8. I don't put ice in soft drinks. Comes from hitting a drive-through window, getting a cupful of ice with one swallow of soft drink and being out of liquid before I get out of the parking lot.

  9. I eat the outer chocolate shell on candy bars first, then the innards. The easiest (and most gratifying) is to completely "peel" a Three Musketeers bar and be left with only the soft, fluffy stuff.

  10. As Robert Hayes said in Airplane!: I have a drinking problem. When eating out, I will frequently down 4 or more glasses of water in addition to my 3+ glasses of Dr. Pepper or cups of coffee. I usually just ask the waitperson if they can put a water pitcher on the table. Saves me from being frustrated that they aren't refilling fast enough and saves them from having to come by the table every 5 minutes. (And yes, I do tip well when I'm not thirsty!)

  11. I eat cake. I eat ice cream. I do not eat cake and ice cream. Soggy cake is not my idea of fun.

  12. There are two food items that do not pass my lips. Elbow macaroni: Eeewww. Retch. I will eat spaghetti/linguini/ravioli/lasagna noodle, actually pretty much anything except elbows. Or shells.
The second item is breakfast sausage. Especially patties. I'll eat pretty much anything in a casing, but if the sausage is form-able (like hamburger/minced beef is), it ain't going down.
In fact, even the smell of macaroni and cheese or breakfast sausage is enough to make me leave a room.

  13. A trip to Subway sandwiches is always an adventure. When did Subway decide to put the meat and cheese on bare bread, then glop mayo/mustard/whatever on top? Who makes sandwiches like that? The condiments go ON the bread. Period. Now that they're toasting their sandwiches, I've expanded my picky-ness to insist that they pile on the veggies (spinach, olives, onions, green peppers) before they go into the toaster. After that they can add cucumbers (and probably more olives) before wrapping it up. And forget the oil-and-vinegar-salt-and-pepper. I don't see the point in burying the flavor of such an artistically-built sandwich.

The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates. Visiting fellow Thirteen-ers is encouraged!

Great list! And burgers at Red Robin are a good thing, IMHO.

I admire you. Anyone who can knit, needlepoint, make hats...has my admiration. I'm lucky to get a button on a shirt.

Thanks for stopping by...and happy TT!

Great T13 Idea! I can relate to several- the food smoothing (I canNOT put the lid back on the butter in the mornings unless I smooth it all back out after buttering my toast); my DH hates ice in soda for the same reason as yours; I eat KitKats the way you described! I love getting down to just the wafers :) Too cool.

(This was my first week to post or read T13! So glad I stumbled upon yours :)

Great list. I eat apples the same way--now I always have to cut them up or I feel like I'm wasting food.

Am I supposed to leave my TT link here?

I hate ice in my drinks too and sausage, especially the breakfast patties. I suppose I have issues with the sausage texture! Ew!!

My list is here.
